Description
Turmeric is the rhizome or underground stem of a ginger-like plant. It is usually available ground, as a bright yellow, fine powder. The whole turmeric is a tuberous rhizome, with a rough, segmented skin. The rhizome is yellowish-brown with a dull orange interior that looks bright yellow when powdered

Usage
Ground Turmeric is used commercially to color mustards, butter and cheese. Ground Turmerics culinary uses are best know in the East, particularly India and China. Ground Turmeric is used as a natural yellow coloring for soups and sauces, in rice dishes, and curry. Makes a nice garnish for light colored sauces.

Attributed Medical Properties
It is a valuable home remedy for bronchial asthma. A teaspoon of turmeric powder with a glass of milk twice or thrice daily is very effective. Turmeric is a valuable intestinal antiseptic. The rhizome, its juice or dry powder, mixed in buttermilk or plain water is highly beneficial in intestinal problems, especially chronic diarrhea. It also helps prevent flatulence. Turmeric with its antiseptic properties is a useful remedy for chronic cough and throat irritations.
